This is our design for a new family dwelling called Valley View in East Gomeldon coming together. The site is on a corner plot and slopes down to woodland beyond. From the front it is designed to appear as a chalet bungalow, but at the rear it steps down with the kitchen dining area opening up to gardens. There is a terrace on the middle floor maximising the valley views. The rooms in the roof are vaulted and there is a home office above the garage. The mixture of light render, timber cladding and grey windows helps create a striking attractive home, especially when approached up the hill. Looking forward to seeing this completed! ...
As plot 1 starts on site in Shrewton, we are delighted to announce we received delegated approval earlier in the year for a 2nd new dwelling on the plot of grade 2 listed house. Set higher up in the plot, it has been carefully positioned so that it is screened from the street with existing mature trees across the site. It will have 4 vaulted bedrooms, open plan living spaces, super levels of insulation, garage carport, great outdoor space and run on air source heat pump and solar pv. Great working again with Bob at Forum Heritage and Richard Greenwood at Benchmark Planning along with our self builder client!

Home office -
Over the last few years working from home has become more and more popular. There are many advantages including greater flexibility with the working day, reduction of travel time and less damage to the environment. For many it is important to achieve a work/life balance and we are increasingly asked to look at creating office space external from the home in either new or existing buildings. This has included our own new office, which was completed earlier this year. It contains a garage and storage space at ground with our vaulted workspace at first floor. The space is naturally well lit and ventilated with rooflights and gable windows. The ridge is a nice big glulam beam. The structure is highly insulated and heated with simple electric rads which run off the solar pvs on our roof. We are fully networked and have meeting space for our clients to visit and talk through projects. We are self contained outside the family home, but can also manage our busy family life!
If you are looking for home office space please get in touch and we are happy to help! #homeoffice #architecture #homebuisness #aesthetics #sketchup #bircharchitects ...

This project involved the complete renovation and addition of a first floor of a tired bungalow in Parley which had a poor frontage including an old conservatory bolted to an existing bay window! We worked very closely with the clients from the outset to create a modern 5 bed detached dwelling that was also in keeping with similar local developments and respected the scale and privacy of the neighbours. The rear kitchen dining area now opens up to the mature rear garden and there is a much better inside outside relationship. The first floor spaces are all vaulted bringing in lots of natural light and ventilation especially to the double height entrance space. The whole dwelling envelope has been thermally upgraded, all the windows replaced and the exterior materials of white render, cladding and slate roof creates an impressive facade and transforms this old bungalow into a modern family home! #beforeandafter #architecture #modern #extension #building #bircharchitecture #dorset #hampshire #wiltshire ...
5 Oliver’s Battery Gardens - This recently completed new home was built on the side garden plot of an existing bungalow in Winchester. The new dwelling is on a narrow road with limited access for construction vehicles and little space to store materials. Therefore the decision was made to use an insulated, off site timber frame SIP construction. Once the groundwork was complete, the building shell went up in two weeks. The shell was then clad with timber and acrylic render. A chunky chimney created sone thermal mass. The end result is a high quality, well insulated, air tight home that requires minimal heating input from the air source heat pump. This compact energy efficient dwelling provides 3 bedrooms, double height vaulted spaces, a cosy snug area, and an open plan kitchen, dining, living area opening onto a side garden. Clever landscaping and terracing to the rear creates a private garden area. The build fits in perfectly with the scale and massing along the street. Great clients and wonderful working again with Mark and Trevor at PAH construction. #architecture #modernarchitecture #traditional #newforest #wiltshire #hampshire #architect #bircharchitecture #newbuild ...
One of our latest projects “Lower Orchard” is a new build house near Salisbury. It is a contemporary home with a simple, well detailed form clad in a mixture of brick, vertical cedar, expressed steel frame and large areas of glazing which bring in natural light and views over the fields to the rear. The building is highly insulated and has underfloor heating throughout. It is powered by an air source heat pump and solar pvs. There is a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system which helps keep fresh air moving in each room. The house is highly sustainable and energy efficient.
Internally there are large open plan kitchen/ dining /snug spaces and a separate living room at ground floor, large glazed sliding doors to the rear, a steel and timber open staircase, and three bedrooms with en-suites at first floor. A large gallery landing links ground and first and maximises the views to the rear. The interior colour pallet consists of timber floor and calming light paint tones. This allows the homeowners to dress the space with bursts of colourful furniture, a classic album cover wall and family pictures and photos. It also allows enjoyment of the views and the changing seasons which fill every room!

Rear extensions
This Cottage is in the New Forest National Park. It was a small worker cottage on a large plot that faced many planning constraints.
We managed to significantly increase the floor area with a two storey side extension and a creative triple oak gable rear extension along with an oak front porch that was respectful of the original humble cottage yet clearly contemporary and new. The idea was to open up the rear to the fantastic plot, bring the outside space in and create a genuine family hub. Large overhangs, and a combination of handmade brick, oak, slate and aluminum windows all help the building blend into its setting. The side extension is clad vertically in two widths of treated larch giving the design a contemporary yet sensitive relationship to its surroundings.

Great start to the year! We have had 3 planning approvals come through this week: Approval to convert 3 existing redundant barns into 3 new 3 bed dwellings in the New Forest AONB, approval for a new 2 bed detached dwelling on a garden plot in Abingdon Oxford, and a new 2 storey rear extension to a thatched property in a conservation area in the New Forest. All projects overcame site and planning constraints and demonstrate real teamwork along with genuine collaboration with the local planning authority. ...
